Texas Instruments Goes Big in 3G
Texas Instruments has been involved with 3G phone manufacturers, building custom 3G chipsets, since the early days of 3G. TI has just jumped into the 3G market with both feet, announcing their OMAPV2230 design which contains TI’s own baseband chip, developed in-house, for the 3G phone market. In the past, Texas Instruments built custom 3G chips for handset manufacturers like Nokia that were designed to the handset manufacturer’s specifications and design. Now, TI hopes to dominate the 3G chipmaker space by building their own, standardized, 3G baseband processor.
3G Still Young
The 3G marketplace is still young and the phone market has been slow to adopt the 3G handsets currently available. But, this will likely change once consumers become more aware of 3G handset capabilities as carriers promote them across Europe and the United States. According to the Red Herring, handset manufacturers are expected to ship 45 million 3G handsets in 2005 which is up from 17 million last year. This still represents a small percentage of the approximate 800 million handsets sold worldwide each year.
