3G Phones
Today, just about every mobile phone that comes on the market is 3G capable. Manufacturers like LG, Sony/Ericsson, Nokia, HP and Palm all make mobile phones, smartphones and/or PDAs that are capable of utilizing high speed data transmission/receiving over the 2.5G and 3G networks in the United States. Some carriers have made it further along the path of 3G implementation and as of right now, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless are in the lead with their 1xEV-DO data networks in place in most major US cities. Both plan to roll out their service to over 200 cities by the second or third quarter of 2006. Unfortunately, most of the equipment that has been sold already does not have the abiility to use the EV-DO or soon-to-be-released HSPDA networks. Yes, another hardware purchase will be required, unless you own some of the latest equipment.
